MEEL 01

This morning, as I entered my class, Miss Adilah sat on her chair with a laptop in front of her. Atiqah and I went to buy dessert for our breakfast. I knew, the laptop was not Miss Adilah's but it was my classmate, Noni. Miss asked Noni, who bought this, and she replied, "My father bought it to me". Miss said how lucky we are nowadays as most of our fathers bought such things for us. I think that's right and we should be grateful.

Today, we have learnt about passive voice. What is the passive voice? In fact, passive voice is more formal than the active voice and is often used when professionals are speaking or writing to other professionals. It is more appropiate to use the active voice with patients, patient's relatives and close colleagues. Only this morning I knew about this...

Then, we proceed our lesson by learning about the diagnosis of a patient. We had to create follow-up questions based on what we have learnt in the previous lesson.

We ended our class at 10.00 a.m and my friends and I went to the INTEC library to do some assignments. We don't have any other class today as Ustaz cancelled his Arabic class for this morning.

Prepare for ROLE PLAY!!

How can you describe about the pain? Well, when we hear about pain, there are so many things that we can describe it. They are the nouns, verbs and also adjectives of the pain such as suffer, inflammation, cut and so on. Actually, this morning I have learnt on how to describe the severity of a pain in correctly manner.

Then, lesson 2 in Unit 3 is about how to say a bad or good news to a patient. There are two ways or tone in saying something to the patient. They are accusing tone and supporting tone. The accusing tone is actually more to angry tone of voice while the supporting tone is politely speaking. We had to hear these kinds of tone through Miss Adilah's laptop and we jotted down the type of tone in the box provided.

Our last lesson today was lesson 3 which was about causing the patient upset. We, as the doctors need to avoid such communication in order to prevent the patient getting down.

In fact, our lesson today are all about for the preparation of our role-play that will be held next week, on Tuesday. The role-play have 15% of our marks in this subject.

In auditorium!!!

Yesterday, actually all MEPs students (Middle East Programme) had an intensive class of english. In fact, it was not compulsory for us to attend it or not, but we thought it was quite vital for us. The class was held in an auditorium at block U and the facilitators were Miss Adilah and Miss Hasnaa. The class began at 3 p.m., after solat Jumaat. Akma, Maha, Syafekar and I entered the auditorium a bit late, at 3.05 in the evening. So, we had to sit at the back and luckily for us, we could hear and see the facilitators' voice and the slide show clearly.

The class was divided into three sessions, which were grammar session, explaination about individual assignment and lastly the tenses. First and foremost, Miss Adilah started the first session. She explained to us about SVA (Subject, verb and agreement).

Then Miss Hasnaa took place the session by explaining about the individual assignment which all of us have to do it. She told us on how to prepare an assignment by using APA format. After the session, we can understand more about the assignment.

Finally, Miss Hasnaa taught us a little bit about tenses. The class ended at 4.50 in the evening.

Continue our lesson...

Today, my friends and I learnt english as usual. We continue our lesson with lesson 4 until 6. First and foremost, based on what we have learnt this morning, lesson 4 is about questions should be asked by the doctor to the patient's parents. We had to create our own questions based on the Medical Screening Exam and also the symptoms and signs given. Then, Miss Adilah asked all of us to write our question each on the white board. There are five diseases given. The diseases are asthma, Cystic fibrosis, Bronchiolitis, Aspiration of foreign body and Croup.

Next, we learnt about lesson 5 which is about doctor needs to take a sample like cerebrospinal fluid of a patient. Besides that, we also learnt how to use appropiate expression to be told to a patient in spite of using scaring statement. This will help us to be more polite to our patients and they also might be relax and not to be scared upon treatment.

Last but not least, lesson 6 is about explaining the procedure. In this lesson, we have taught how to describe the lumbar puncture procedure. This procedure was about to take samples of cerebrospinal fluid for testing.

What I can conclude about today's class is, this subject is so meaningful as we can learn many medical terms and we also exposed to the real situation in Emergency Room (ER). So far, I enjoy myself with this subject and I really love it.

New topic...

In the early morning, as my classmates and I was chatting, all of us surprised as Miss Adilah entered our class so early this morning. She entered our class at 7.30 a.m.!! English class should be started on 8.10 a.m.. At that time, most of the girls had entered the class. However, for the boys, only Asyraf came early. So, we have to wait for the rest to come in.
At 8.10 a.m., we started our lesson, new topic today. We have learnt new topic. It is topic 2, which are lesson 1 until 3. First of all, lesson 1 was about listening to advice, giving advice by using telephone. In this lesson, we learnt how a doctor gives advice to the medical assistant. Here, I will write about communication tips when using telephone. The tips are:
  1. If you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask.
  2. If the person is speaking too quickly, immediately ask him/her to slow down.
  3. As the person is speaking, repeat what is being said. The person will soon realize if you are not understanding.
  4. Make the excuse that the line is bad and ask the person to speak a bit louder. He/she will usually speak slower as well.
Next, lesson 2 was about listen to discharge instructions, explaining a case to a relative giving discharge instruction. By this lesson, we understood about the discharge instruction
which was given by a doctor or nurse to a patient.
Last but not least, lesson 3 was about reading patient's notes, forming questions to take history from third person, listening to a medical history, and reading for main ideas. In this lesson, we learnt how to take medical history of a patient by asking the patient's mother, wife or husband. This is vital for doctor to diagnose the kind of disease the patient has.

Exciting Friday for me...

Today, it was supposed to be Arabic class started from 8 a.m until 10 a.m.. However, our Ustaz went his hometown, so, English class replaced this period.

When Miss Adilah came into our class, we started to learn a new lesson, which is lesson 5 , " Let me explain your diet". This lesson is about an advice to a diabetec patient on his or her diet, such as how to keep the blood sugar level at a steady level and how to take a balanced diet. In spite of that, we had to calculate amount of calories in one of Mark's mom's servings.

Out of the blue, she realised that we actually have to do a presentation which was given last Tuesday. All of us laughed as we thought she did not remember it.. First of all, girls' group did a creative role-play activity by using slide shows, music and back up sound. The role-play was done by Maha and Atiqah as the main characters who are Mrs Thurston and Robert respectively. I was as a script writer as well as Akma, Noni and Syafekar as the assistants.
Miss Adilah commented us about it and her comments were:
  1. Very creative presentation
  2. Atiqah acs as a good doctor, but it does not need to be too concern with patients because a doctor will has hundreds of patients everyday, so it will take time for every patient.
Our class finished quite early this morning, at 9.30 a.m., as Miss Adilah has something to do. However, she gave us a homework to do, which is lesson 6.

My friends and I went to our college at 11.45 o'clock.. As we arrived at college, Miss Adilah gave us Big Apple!! She wanted to celebrate her flying colours result in her final exam and she got Dean Award.

Conversation Practice...

Last wo days, (Tuesday), Miss Adilah came into our class quite late as she had something to do. So, our class rep. who is Abul, told us to read lesson 3 and 4 in the textbook. That's what Miss Adilah informed to him. So, my friends and I read the topics which are " I'd like to examine you" for the lesson 3 and "What's the diagnosis" for lesson 4.

What I can write here is both of the topics are about the conversation between the doctor, examiner and the patient. These are consist of the manners and the appropiate dialogue as an excellent doctor. In this book, stated that the conversation between Dr. Murray as a doctor and Robert as the examiner who explained the patient's problem to the doctor.

Next, for the exercise D, we had to work in groups and present summaries of the given cases and descriptions by using medical language. My group has to do for case 4 which is the patient is a farmer. The chief complaint is he has low subjective fever, cough with bad tasting phlegm, night sweats, and weight loss getting worse over the last 4 months. His social history, he was a long-term smoker and through the physical examination, the temperature was about 38C, he had gingival disease, dullness to percussion and absent breath sounds in lower right lobe of lung. He was also have the clubbing of fingers. So, from the descriptions given above, we found that the patient had a lung abscess disease...

At the end of our session, Miss Adilah gave us a task to do. The task is a presentation in groups, male and female. The presentation will be held on Friday...

Happy day

I don't know why, today, I felt what a cheerful and happy day for me. First of all, I woke up early at dawn as I heard Azan Subuh. Then at 7.30 a.m., my housemates and I got a bus and went to INTEC as usual to proceed our lesson.

In my class, which is MEG 4 ( Middle East Egypt), we distributed the photocopy notes of Biology and Computer Literacy. As we calculatting the money, Miss Adilah entered our class. All of us seemed like stunned and quiet. About five minutes later, my friends asked me to tell Miss Adilah about the real situation since I sat in front. So, I told Miss Adilah that the first period of this morning, ( 8.00 a.m. - 10.00 a.m) supposed to be Arabic. Now, she had know why all of us puzzled when she entered just now. In fact, Miss Adilah entered the class early while her class started at 10.00 a.m. until 12.00 p.m.

During English lesson, today we learnt the first and second topic in our textbook. The topics are ' So, What can I do For You' and 'When did the problem begin'. These lessons are all about our practices to be a doctor in our future. We did discussions in pairs and together. There are actually 8 steps that should be taken by a doctor in order to examine a patient. They are :
  • Introductory 'small talk'
  • Chief complaint
  • History of present condition
  • Past medical history
  • medication
  • Social history
  • Family history
  • Physical examination

Introductory 'small talk' is about the personal conversation between the doctor and patient that are not related to the disease and condition of the patient. Then, Chief complaint is about patient's illness which answered by the patient like stomachache, earache and etc. History of present condition is have in experience with the disease before, while the 'Past medical history' is the previous disease that the patient has. Next, 'medication' is the medicine that should be taken by the patient. Then, the Social history is about the patient's lifestyle before such as smoking, career and exercises. Family history is about the parents, siblings and relatives who have suffered a certain disease. Last but not least, the physical examination.

PRESENTATION DAY!!1

Assalamualaikum....

Today, I want to write about my English For Pre-Medical Student presentation that has been done yesterday. In fact, this presentation just to prepare ourselves for our real presentation that will be held on July or August.

The presentation was started with my group, which consists of 6 members. In previous post, I have told about our topic, which was Confinement in malay culture. We presentaed by using slideshows. We explained all about the confinement briefly as we can and the topic is quite interesting to discuss.

During my turn, I explained about the taboos along the confinement period. There were a few points I highlighted yesterday. After finishing our presentation, Question & Ask session took place... Lastly, Miss Adilah gave her comments about our presentation... These are her comments :
1. Eye contact with audiences
2. Colour of the fonts should be more contrast with the background.

Then, the other three groups continued the session with their presentation respectively. The comments overall same as my group... The last group which was boys' group, there have a little bit problem. Their slideshows were created in Microsoft Office 2007, but our lecturer's laptop used Microsoft Office 2003.. So, finally, they have to present manually....

Ok, that's all for my post today...
